The development of robust, scalable crystallization processes is of prime importance in PR&D to ensure that problems of development and scale up in primary and secondary manufacture are reduced to a minimum. Specialist personnel are therefore required to advise and guide chemists and engineers through the
complexities of the crystallization process.
The crystallization scientist will:-
Conduct crystallization experiments and determine, e.g. temperature-solubility curves, metastable zone widths and the effect of various process parameters (cooling and stirring rates, seeding) on the crystals obtained. Develop expertise in equipment set-up, data handling and interpretation from the process analytical technology (PAT) in the Process Engineering laboratory, e.g. microscopes, focused beam reflectance measurements (3 Lasentec probes), turbidity probe, ATR UV-vis and ATR FTIR spectroscopes, PVM and associated crystallization vessels. Become familiar with, and where appropriate use, basic solid-state analytical techniques, e.g. DSC TGA, XRPD, ESEM to determine crystal habits and physical form.Assist PR&D colleagues in application of crystallization theory and techniques. Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of new laboratory crystallization equipment and assist in their evaluation.Develop the use of new experimental methods and technologies, (particularly automated) for the determination of crystallisation fundamentals in the laboratory. Carry out studies on scale-up and scale-down studies of selected crystallisations on current projects, particularly pures processes. Establish principles that can be used for future use. Liaise with the LSL and PP3 staff to ensure that crystallisation process data, e.g. Lasentec are collected and compared with laboratory data. Establish any correlations. Where necessary investigate and compare alternative crystallisation methods, e.g. spray drying, sonocrystallisation and supercritical fluid crystallisations to manipulate, e.g. particle size distributions or physical form.
In collaboration with PAR&D, carry out studies on selected development compounds to demonstrate the effect of crystallisation process variables on product performance in secondary manufacture.
Grow appreciation of regulatory, IP and Product Development issues related to crystallisation.
Where appropriate participate in academic collaborations, including visits to key universities.
Develop and optimise new and existing crystallisation and downstream processes together with prediction of scale and equipment phenomena. Use the scientific literature to aid the identification of alternative approaches to projects and assist with problem solving. Record experimental data and produce documentation to departmental standards, to support the development and registration of chemical entities and smooth technology transfers.
Desired Candidate Profile:
To be successful in the role of crystallization scientist the candidate will require, or be willing to gain, technical knowledge in the following areas:-
Materials science applied to the organic solid-state, e.g. drying, milling, particle size analysis
In addition, the candidate will have the following personal attributes

Show the ability to learn and apply knowledge and expertise to crystallization problems
Have good communication and interpersonal skills with personnel from interacting departments
Show flexibility in working patterns
Have a thorough understanding of the principles and application of SHE

Qualifications: Ph.D. (Chemistry) with 4-5 years experience in an industrial/ academic setting.
